Windows 8.1: How to boot to desktop

Setting your desktop as the default start up, step-by-step
By default, Windows 8.1 boots to the Start Screen introduced in Windows 8. To make Windows boot straight to your desktop instead:

  1. Right-click on the Windows taskbar.
  2. Open the Navigation tab.
  3. Check "When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start".
  4. Click OK. You're done.

The setting will take effect immediately.
