Quicktime 7.7.1 on Ubuntu 11.10 with Wine

Linux media players are more than capable at Quicktime video playback. So why the need to install Quicktime using Wine? Some Windows apps need it, that's why. If it's just playback we wanted there's no reason to go to great lengths.

So, here's how to install Quicktime on Ubuntu using Wine. I'm using Wine 1.3.28 and downloaded Quicktime 7.7.1 from Apple's site.

~$ cd Downloads
~$ wine QuickTimeInstaller.exe

Proceed as usual with Windows apps, and you're done.

Known issues

As is the case when running Windows apps using Wine, there's some quirks with the installed software. Some things don't work the way they should on native Windows.

  • You get a error dialog after you close Quicktime. This doesn't affect Quicktime's normal operations so just close it. You're done with it anyway.
  • Quicktime's web content never loads. This doesn't affect .mov playback though
