Firefox 7 released

So this is it. For years, people have criticised Firefox for its memory consumption. With Firefox 7, we're finally seeing the benefits from MemShrink trickle in. That's not all, of course.

Here's the highlights (mostly copy and pasted from the release notes):

  • Drastically improved memory handling for certain use cases
  • Added a new rendering backend to speed up Canvas operations on Windows systems
  • Added an opt-in system for users to send performance data back to Mozilla to improve future versions of Firefox
  • Fixed several stability issues
  • Fixed several security issues
Ubuntu 11.04 users should be seeing updates soon. Oneiric has been on Firefox 7 since before final release. It's awesome!
