Fixing an empty Windows services window

You might get an empty window when you head over to Windows' management console and try to use the services snap-in.

Empty services.msc window
This could be due to various reasons:
  • Faulty system memory
  • Faulty hard disk
  • Improper shutdown
  • Malicious software
These are just some possible reasons I could think of off the top of my head. I'm sure there's more if you look hard enough. It's amazingly easy to recreate this issue too, but that's not the purpose of this post. Here, we want the fix. And, here it is.

Launch a command prompt, and run the following:

:\> regsvr32 jscript.dll

Problem solved. Due to jscript.dll not being registered, or the registration being corrupted, you get the issue from the screenshot. Once you re-register jscript.dll everything works again.

services.msc working as it should
