Things to look forward to in the new year

With a new year just started you can expect wonderful new things arriving throughout the year.

The arrival of AMD's Fusion APUs, Bulldozer, and Intel's Sandy Bridge release are just some of the more high profile hardware releases expected this year. It'll be interesting to see how things turn out. Of course, the expectation is that Intel will win on the CPU side, while AMD wins on the GPU hands down against Intel's sad looking IGP. That certainly looks true for the CPU since AMD's CPU is based on current designs with some improvements but once Bulldozer is available, who knows? But that's way beyond even this year.

On the software side, there's things like kernel performance improvements for the desktop, the new Ubuntu Unity, btrfs, OpenCL, and lots of others. As an Ubuntu user, the kernel improvements are most welcome. The "bottleneck" in the kernel is getting rather annoying lately. It really feels like it's slowly getting worse with each Ubuntu release, but then that's just my personal perception with no scientific analysis whatsoever.

It's an exciting year ahead indeed.
